Can’t come to the Museum? Let us bring the Museum to you! We are delighted to offer a range of outreach workshops (where we come to your school) or virtual workshops (via an online platform).

Our outreach workshops focus on mining history and heritage in your local area! Each are tailored and include:

  • Real mining objects for pupils to handle
  • Costumes for everyone to dress up and imagine what life was like as a miner
  • Photographs and maps from our collection showing your local mining area
  • An interactive talk from NMMS Education Manager starting with what coal is, what it was used for, the Industrial Revolution, life as a Victorian miner, right through to the end of deep coal mining
  • The topics included can be modified to suit your class topic – for instance if you are looking at energy we will include coal as a source of non-renewable energy and a discussion of green house gases

How long does the outreach workshop last? Workshops last 1hr and we are happy to provide more than one workshop per school, for instance if more than one class would like to take part. Costs apply.

Our virtual workshops are available for any school or educational group across Scotland, free of charge! There are two options available:

  1. Meet the Miner – this is a fantastic opportunity to hear first-hand what life was like as a miner! Pupils will hear from one of our ex-miner Tour Guides about life as a miner and they will offer a live safety lamp demonstration. Afterwards, pupils will be able to ask their burning questions for the miners to answer. This live video call lasts 30 minutes, is not recorded, and takes place over Microsoft Teams (unless another platform is preferred)
  2. Your Topic – this video call uses real objects and photographs to bring your topic to life! It is completely tailored to your class topic and can include anything from the Titanic, your local history, to climate change! This lasts 30 minutes and includes time to answer pupil questions. The live video call is not recorded and takes place over Microsoft Teams (unless another platform is preferred).

You can book one of our loan boxes to use with your class in conjunction with either of these virtual workshops.
