For a second year running National Mining Museum Scotland was proud to host the Midlothian Primary Schools Careers Event at the end of May. The Event saw 250 pupils from 7 schools in Midlothian engage with over 25 employers from across Scotland.

The event importantly introduced and raised pupil’s awareness of future career options. Employers at the event were spread across the Museum, and covered a breadth of industries from the arts, heritage and culture, emergency services, STEM and space. Employers inspired and engaged pupils through activities, demonstrations and meaningful conversations. Feedback from teachers and their classes was extremely positive. Pupils in attendance highlighted in their feedback that they enjoyed the variety of hands-on activities across the day from “mini gold rush… when we got to see and hold/touch the snake… I made the water into electricity… when we got to burger press.”

The list of all employers can be downloaded below.

The Event was organised between National Mining Museum Scotland and Newtongrange Primary School. It was additionally supported by the Mining Institute of Scotland Trust (MIST) and Developing the Young Workforce (DYW). With both supporting employers also attending the event on the day.

A teacher from the day summarised that their pupils: “were all inspired and excited to learn about jobs they had never heard of or considered and had so much fun while they were there. Lots of parents mentioned their children talked about it at home.”
